WoW Mocks FF14's Housing in New Update
Blizzard Entertainment has announced the introduction of player housing to World of Warcraft in its upcoming expansion, World of Warcraft: Midnight. This eagerly anticipated feature was showcased in a recent developer preview, where the WoW team not only detailed the early aspects of this system but also took a playful swipe at the housing mechanics in Final Fantasy XIV.
One of the core principles outlined in the recent dev blog is "A Home for Everyone." Blizzard emphasized their commitment to making housing accessible to all players, stating, "As a part of our focus on wide adoption, we wanted to ensure that Housing is available to everyone. If you want a house, you can have a house." They promise no high purchase costs, no lotteries, and no stringent upkeep requirements. Importantly, players won't lose their homes if their subscription lapses.
Player housing in MMOs allows players to purchase and personalize their own spaces within the game world, which can be visited by others. This feature has been a significant draw in Final Fantasy XIV, where it has spurred creativity, resulting in theater productions, nightclubs, cafes, and museums. However, Final Fantasy XIV's housing system has faced criticism for its limited plots, high costs, lottery system, and the risk of demolition if left unattended.
World of Warcraft aims to address these issues by ensuring housing is more inclusive and less stressful. Housing will be shared among the Warband, allowing characters to access homes across different factions. For instance, while a Human character cannot purchase a house in a Horde zone, a Troll character in the same Warband can, and the Human can then use it.
The housing system will be divided into two zones, with "Neighborhoods" containing around 50 plots each. These neighborhoods will be instanced, offering both Public and Private options. Public neighborhoods are managed by the game servers and can be created "as needed," suggesting no hard cap on the number of neighborhoods.
Blizzard is dedicated to making housing a "long lasting journey" with ongoing updates and expansions. Alongside "boundless self-expression" and "deeply social" experiences, the team is committed to evolving the housing system over time. While taking a light-hearted jab at Final Fantasy XIV's housing challenges, Blizzard demonstrates a clear understanding of the potential pitfalls and is striving to create a more user-friendly and engaging system.
More details about World of Warcraft: Midnight and its housing feature are expected to be revealed this summer.
