Elden Ring Ditching Beloved FromSoftware Mechanic
Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not include an in-game messaging system, a hallmark feature of previous Soulsborne titles. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.
While the asynchronous messaging system has been a key element of player engagement in previous games, fostering community interaction and humorous moments, it's deemed incompatible with Nightreign's intended intensity and pacing.
Preserving Asynchronous Features
Despite the omission of the messaging system, FromSoftware intends to retain and enhance other asynchronous features from Elden Ring. The bloodstain mechanic will return, improved to allow players to not only witness but also loot the ghosts of fallen players. This reinforces the game's focus on intense, short bursts of gameplay.
A "Compressed" RPG Experience
The decision to remove the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign as a "compressed RPG." The three-day structure, also mentioned by Ishizaki, contributes to this goal of delivering a high-intensity experience with minimal downtime and maximum variety.
Release Window
Elden Ring Nightreign was revealed at The Game Awards 2024, targeting a 2025 release. A specific release date is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
