Scalebound: Is a Revival in Development?

Scalebound was once heralded as one of the most ambitious action projects of its era, blending dynamic combat, immersive music, and a novel system of interaction with a colossal dragon companion. This title was poised to be a standout Xbox One exclusive, capturing the imagination of gamers worldwide upon its announcement in 2014. However, after years of anticipation, Microsoft pulled the plug on its development in 2017, leaving fans disappointed.
Recently, the official account of Clovers Inc on X shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his team revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. In the video, Kamiya reminisced about the creative process behind the game and expressed continued pride in the project, despite its cancellation. Adding fuel to the fire, Kamiya retweeted the video with a poignant message directed at Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming division: "Come on, Phil, let's do this!". This direct appeal indicates Kamiya's ongoing interest in reviving Scalebound, echoing sentiments he shared as early as 2022 about wanting to discuss the project's resurrection with Microsoft.
The gaming community frequently buzzes with speculation about Scalebound's return, with rumors intensifying in early 2023 when multiple sources suggested a possible reboot. Yet, Microsoft has remained tight-lipped, offering no official confirmation. When questioned about Scalebound by the Japanese publication Game Watch, Phil Spencer offered a cryptic smile and stated, "I have nothing to add at this time".
Even if Microsoft were to reconsider, fans shouldn't hold their breath for an immediate revival. Hideki Kamiya is currently engrossed in developing a new installment of Okami at Clovers Inc. Should Xbox greenlight Scalebound's return, Kamiya would need to wrap up his current project before diving back into the world of dragons and dynamic combat. Still, the persistent interest in Scalebound after all these years offers a glimmer of hope that one day, this long-awaited game might finally see the light of day.
