Major Update: Deadlock Now Three Lanes Instead of Four
Deadlock, the innovative third-person MOBA, has just rolled out a major update that shifts its gameplay dynamics significantly. The game, which was previously structured with four lanes, is now transitioning to a more streamlined three-lane format. This change, announced via a Steam post on February 26, 2025, aims to simplify the map structure and enhance the overall gaming experience.
Four-lane Map Becomes Three Lanes

The transformation from four to three lanes comes with a comprehensive overhaul of the game's map. Valve's update details a wide array of modifications including changes to visuals, building layouts, pathways, neutral camps, air vents, breakables, powerup buffs, juke spots, and even the mid boss. This redesign not only simplifies the map but also introduces a fresh set of strategic possibilities for players.
Deadlock's unique take on the MOBA genre, with its third-person perspective, has always set it apart. The initial addition of a fourth lane to the traditional three-lane format added complexity, but now, the shift back to three lanes aims to refine the gameplay experience. Additionally, farming mechanics have been updated; players no longer need to last-hit enemies to summon Soul Orbs, making early laning phases more accessible. The patch also promises improvements to the game's netcode and client performance, ensuring smoother gameplay.
Vital Update for Deadlock

This significant update could be the revitalization that Deadlock needs. Following a peak of 171,490 active players in September 2024, the game experienced a sharp decline, with player counts dropping to around 17,000 this past month. This update is poised to rekindle interest and draw players back into the fold.
Valve Developer Yoshi, in a January 2025 statement on Deadlock's Discord server, explained the shift in update scheduling. The previous two-week cycle was too restrictive for implementing substantial changes. Moving forward, major patches will be larger but less frequent, with hotfixes released as needed. Yoshi noted, "Going forward, major patches will no longer be on a fixed schedule. These patches will be larger than before, albeit a little bit more spaced out, and hotfixes will continue to be released as needed. We look forward to fleshing out the game in the new year."
Currently, Deadlock remains in active development and playtesting, accessible only via friend invite. While there's no official word on a specific release date, the game continues to evolve. For more updates and details about Deadlock, be sure to visit our dedicated page on the game.
