New Gameplay Details Revealed for Doom: The Dark Ages
Doom: The Dark Ages – A Medieval Twist on Classic Gameplay
EDGE magazine recently unveiled exciting new details about Doom: The Dark Ages, emphasizing a narrative-driven experience within the franchise's largest levels yet. Game director Hugo Martin and studio head Marty Stratton highlighted key features:
Unlike previous installments where lore was primarily revealed through text logs, The Dark Ages will feature a more direct storytelling approach. The game's aesthetic shifts to a medieval setting, minimizing futuristic elements and redesigning iconic weapons to fit this new atmosphere.

While retaining the series' signature level-based structure, Doom: The Dark Ages introduces its largest levels to date, seamlessly blending dungeon crawling with open-world exploration. The game is structured into "acts," progressing from confined dungeons to expansive areas. Unique gameplay elements include the ability to control both a dragon and a mech, promising diverse combat encounters.
A revolutionary addition to the Slayer's arsenal is a versatile shield that functions as a throwable chainsaw. Its impact varies based on the target material (flesh, armor, energy shields, etc.). The shield also enables a dash attack for swift battlefield movement, compensating for the absence of double jumps and roars from previous games. Furthermore, the shield allows for parrying, with adjustable difficulty settings for precise timing.
Parrying acts as a melee attack "reload," while melee combat replenishes primary weapon ammunition, echoing the chainsaw mechanic in DOOM Eternal. Melee combat options include a fast gauntlet, a balanced shield, and a slower mace.
