Switch 2 VRR Limited to Handheld Mode
In early April, Nintendo Switch 2 enthusiasts spotted references to variable refresh rate (VRR) on official system pages before the details were removed. Nintendo has now clarified how and where VRR functions on the upcoming console.
Speaking to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed the initial website listing contained inaccuracies: "The Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR exclusively in handheld mode. We regret the error in our earlier communication."
When questioned about potential VRR support for docked mode via future updates, Nintendo stated it currently has "no announcements regarding this feature."
While VRR will enhance portable gameplay, current indications suggest TV players won't benefit from this technology at launch.
This clarification follows widespread speculation after the initial VRR references appeared and subsequently vanished across multiple platforms, as documented by Digital Foundry's Oliver Mackenzie.
Though this may disappoint gamers hoping for TV VRR support initially, precedent exists for post-launch implementation - Sony similarly added VRR to PS5 through firmware updates.
In related Switch 2 developments, Nintendo recently announced performance-enhanced versions of several titles including Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Nintendo of America's Doug Bowser also assured sufficient console availability "through the holiday season."
