Dune: Awakening Devs Detail Sandworm Mechanics

Author : Aurora May 06,2025

In *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms will serve as a dynamic and unpredictable natural force, rather than a tool players can summon at their convenience. Unlike the iconic scenes from Frank Herbert's novels where characters could beckon these giant creatures using a thumper, this mechanic will not be available in the game.

According to the developers, sandworms are designed as NPCs with meticulously crafted patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors integrated into the game engine. Players won't have the option to summon a worm near an enemy base to disrupt opponents strategically. However, if a sandworm is in the vicinity, players can attempt to draw its attention—perhaps by moving actively through the sand or deploying a thumper. Yet, these actions don't assure the worm's presence in the area.

Riding sandworms, a hallmark of the Freman culture as depicted in Herbert's books and popularized by the *Dune* cinematic universe, will not be part of *Dune: Awakening*. The developers have cited pressure from the filmmakers behind the *Dune* movies as the reason for excluding this feature. However, they have hinted that post-launch updates might introduce additional content related to Freman culture, which could include the much-anticipated worm-riding mechanics. For now, though, there's no guarantee that players will get to experience this iconic activity.

*Dune: Awakening* is set to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow later.
