"Avowed: A Spiritual Successor to Morrowind's Enchanting World"
Avowed might not be groundbreaking, but it is a captivating RPG that resonates deeply with fans of exploration. The game brings to mind the legendary Morrowind, an RPG that set new standards for immersive worlds long before today's benchmarks were established. In Morrowind, every element of the landscape, from rocks and bushes to mountains and the ocean floor, promised adventure. Obsidian Entertainment has embraced the challenge of recapturing this sense of discovery, and early impressions suggest they've done so with remarkable success.
The World of Pillars of Eternity
Set within the expansive universe of Pillars of Eternity, Avowed welcomes players into a meticulously crafted world that doesn't necessitate prior knowledge of the series. While familiarity with the previous games can enrich your experience, the narrative unfolds seamlessly through in-game dialogues and contextual hints. The storyline follows an emissary appointed by the Emperor of Aedyr, tasked with investigating a mysterious fungal plague that corrupts souls and incites madness in the Living Lands. In this universe, souls cycle through life, death, and reincarnation. The protagonist, marked by a divine touch at birth from an unknown god, bears peculiar growths resembling plants or fungi on their head, which can evoke fear in others.
A Chaotic Welcome to Paradise
Upon reaching the Living Lands, the protagonist faces a tumultuous arrival as their ship is assaulted by deranged Aedyran guards. Landing in the port city of Paradise—a name that feels both ironic and apt—you encounter a city in disarray, with high-ranking officials missing and the gates sealed shut. This scenario is a nod to classic RPG tropes, setting the stage for adventure. The joy of exploration is immediate; diving into the sea near the port uncovers sunken treasures, while a chance encounter with a smugglers' camp leads to eavesdropping and a narrow escape. Back in the port, quests beckon, urging you to explore every hidden corner.
Treasures Beneath Every Stone
One standout moment involves breaking into a locked house, pilfering its contents, and then climbing scaffolding to reach a lighthouse. At its summit, a treasure map, rare yellow-tier boots with a compelling backstory, and stunning vistas await. As night descends, the surrounding mushrooms illuminate, unveiling new paths and secrets. The game world is brimming with surprises; beneath the lighthouse, a chest lies hidden under spiderwebs, waiting to be revealed by fire. Nearby, coins rest in a nest perched on beams, and a backpack filled with goodies hangs on a cliff's edge. Even an ice grenade can freeze water temporarily, allowing access to submerged loot.
Stories Waiting to Be Discovered
The game is rich with moments of discovery. Supplies appear unexpectedly on rooftops, behind waterfalls, and atop hills, leading to new quests, rare relics, and intriguing scenarios. For example, while scavenging in the slums, breaking into a shack leads to meeting a blind man and his grieving wife, threatened by mercenaries. Another quest involves retrieving a lost ring from a sewer, which unexpectedly boosts health regeneration—a valuable item I chose to keep. Another poignant encounter involves finding two lovers who died together, near a lift leading to the northern outskirts where guards investigate a dead smuggler. Following this trail leads to a battle with reptilians and a formidable giant, testing combat skills and equipment.
Endless Possibilities and Exploration
In just eight hours of playtime, countless adventures unfolded without touching the main questline or engaging in repetitive grinding. The focus was on exploring, experimenting with different character builds, and understanding item interactions. Whether wielding a shield and staff or opting for heavy armor and melee weapons, each choice opened new avenues of play. With many questions still unanswered and numerous systems yet to explore, my journey in Avowed is far from over. The game promises an endless sequence of discoveries, reaffirming why RPGs remain one of gaming's most enthralling genres.
