Application Description

Investigating vehicle collisions just got easier with the EDR "Blackbox" Scan Tool and PDF Accident Reports from Collision Sciences. Our CrashScan app, used with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, allows you to scan a vehicle's computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR), often called the "black box," where supported (see vehicle support below). CrashScan helps investigators identify, capture, and interpret stored accident data, providing valuable insights for validating insurance claims and determining liability in questionable collisions.

Vehicle Support (EDR & Full System Diagnostic Scan)

CrashScan supports over 3000 unique vehicle year/make/model combinations internationally. Check for your vehicle's compatibility here: https://collisionsciences.ca/reports/check_support/

Contextual Accident Reports

A successful CrashScan provides detailed information on impact severity, orientation (front, rear, or side), and crucial contextual data, including:

  • Accident severity (minor, moderate, or severe)
  • EDR trigger thresholds
  • 5 seconds of pre-crash data: speed, brake pedal and accelerator use, and steering input
  • Number of occupants and seatbelt status
  • Estimated repair cost
  • Likelihood of structural crush damage
  • Injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
  • G-force context compared to daily activities

*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration values, scientific articles, and databases such as the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

Privacy Legislation Status (EDR Data)

Canada: Currently, no specific legislation governs EDR data; it's considered diagnostic and non-private. However, insurers generally obtain consent as a best practice.

United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, along with statutes in seventeen states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington), places limitations on EDR data retrieval and emphasizes the owner/lessee's rights to the information. Consent is typically required, with certain exceptions.

End-User Consent

By downloading the CrashScan app, you consent to its installation, future updates, and data collection practices as outlined in our privacy statement. You can withdraw consent at any time by uninstalling the app. For more information, please visit CollisionSciences.ca.
