6 ImagesThese five cards form a "cycle," sharing common design elements across Magic's color spectrum. Each card is a cost-effective, common-rarity creature linked to one of Tarkir's three-color clans, featuring an ability that allows players to convert mana into a color from that clan.

“Three-color limited environments require ample mana fixing at all rarity levels,” explains Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. “We aimed to ensure many decks could access mana fixing, hence we developed several designs focused on resolving mana issues. These creatures enable players to develop their board while simultaneously fixing their mana—a significant advantage over other designs like tapped lands, which only produce mana and can cause you to fall behind.”

Recent Magic sets have faced criticism for leaning too heavily on thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting established planes. However, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out with its straightforward approach to returning to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges this feedback, noting, “The core concept for Tarkir was set long before Murders at Karlov Manor and the subsequent releases, and remained unchanged. We aimed to blend Dragons and Clans in a novel way for Tarkir, with Dragonstorms playing a pivotal role in shaping our return. Lauren and I felt the pressure to authentically build on this beloved plane from the start.”
