Ubisoft Rocked by Abuse Claims in AC Shadows
Ubisoft Responds to Abuse Allegations at External Studio
Ubisoft has issued a statement expressing deep concern regarding allegations of severe mental and physical abuse at Brandoville Studio, an Indonesian outsourcing partner that contributed to Assassin's Creed Shadows. While the abuse did not occur within Ubisoft itself, the company strongly condemns such actions and highlights the urgent need for greater worker protection within the gaming industry.
A recent investigative report by YouTube channel People Make Games detailed disturbing accounts of abuse perpetrated by Kwan Cherry Lai, the commissioner and wife of Brandoville's CEO. These allegations include the mental and physical abuse of employee Christa Sydney, forced religious practices, extreme sleep deprivation, and even the coercion of self-harm. Multiple Brandoville employees have corroborated these claims, citing further instances of financial exploitation and the overworking of a pregnant employee, resulting in premature birth and the tragic loss of her child.
Brandoville's History and the Ongoing Investigation
Founded in 2018, Brandoville Studio ceased operations in August 2024. Allegations of abuse reportedly date back to 2019, a period during which the studio worked on projects including Age of Empires 4 and Assassin's Creed Shadows. Indonesian authorities are currently investigating these claims and seeking to interview Kwan Cherry Lai, who is reportedly in Hong Kong. The prospects of justice for the victims remain uncertain.
The gaming industry's ongoing struggle with workplace abuse, encompassing harassment, poor working conditions, and even online death threats, underscores the critical need for improved employee protections. This case serves as a stark reminder of the systemic issues that persist, demanding immediate and comprehensive action to ensure a safer and more ethical environment for all game developers.
