Ubisoft Launches New Subsidiary for Major IPs with Tencent's €1.16B Investment
Ubisoft has taken a significant step by establishing a new subsidiary focused on its flagship franchises—Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six—backed by a substantial €1.16 billion (approximately $1.25 billion) investment from Tencent. This move comes on the heels of the successful launch of Assassin's Creed Shadows, which has already surpassed 3 million players. This achievement is particularly crucial for Ubisoft, given the recent challenges it faced, including high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations, which led to a historic low in the company's share price.
The newly formed subsidiary, valued at €4 billion (approximately $4.3 billion) and headquartered in France, aims to create "game ecosystems designed to become truly evergreen and multi-platform." Tencent will hold a 25% stake in this venture. Ubisoft plans to leverage this investment to enhance its narrative solo experiences, expand its multiplayer offerings, introduce free-to-play elements, and incorporate more social features into its games.
In addition to these three major franchises, Ubisoft will continue to focus on the development of its Ghost Recon and The Division series, as well as grow its top-performing titles. Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft's co-founder and CEO, described this development as opening a "new chapter" in the company's history. He emphasized that the subsidiary's creation is a pivotal move towards transforming Ubisoft's operating model, aiming for agility and ambition. The goal is to build robust game ecosystems, enhance existing brands, and create new IPs using cutting-edge technologies.
The subsidiary will include development teams in Montréal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia, and will encompass Ubisoft’s back-catalog as well as any new games in development or planned for the future. This ensures the safety of existing projects, and there is currently no indication of further layoffs. The deal is expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.
This strategic partnership with Tencent is poised to strengthen Ubisoft’s balance sheet and foster long-term growth and success for the Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six franchises. Guillemot reiterated Ubisoft's commitment to building a more focused organization that will elevate its brands, accelerate the growth of emerging franchises, and lead innovation in next-generation technologies and services, with the ultimate aim of delivering exceptional gaming experiences and creating value for shareholders and stakeholders.
