"Top Gun Director Kosinski to Helm New Miami Vice Film"
Joseph Kosinski is reportedly set to direct a new adaptation of the iconic NBC police series, Miami Vice, for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project will see Kosinski, known for directing Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, helm the film after the release of his upcoming movie, F1, slated for June.
Dan Gilroy, acclaimed for writing and directing Nightcrawler, is tasked with penning the screenplay. Gilroy's script will build upon an initial draft by Eric Warren Singer, the screenwriter behind Top Gun: Maverick. Recently, Gilroy has been busy contributing multiple episodes to the Star Wars series Andor, which was created by his brother, Tony Gilroy.
Originally created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, Miami Vice ran for five seasons from 1984 to 1989, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as detectives Crockett and Tubbs. The series is celebrated for its groundbreaking approach to television, redefining aesthetics and sound in the medium.
The franchise was previously brought to the big screen in 2006 by Michael Mann, with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in lead roles.
While specifics about the new film are scarce at this point, it is clear that Miami Vice won't be Kosinski's immediate follow-up to F1. This timeline should afford Kosinski ample opportunity to immerse himself in the world of Miami Vice and perfect the project.
