Suicide Squad Update: Studio Trims Workforce
Rocksteady Suffers Further Layoffs Following Suicide Squad's Underperformance
Rocksteady Studios, renowned for the acclaimed Batman: Arkham series, has experienced another wave of layoffs, following the disappointing performance of its latest title, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The game's mixed reception and underwhelming sales have significantly impacted the studio.
The initial blow came in September, with approximately half of Rocksteady's QA staff losing their jobs. This latest round of redundancies, reported by Eurogamer, extends to the programming and art departments, occurring just before the release of the game's final update. Several anonymous employees confirmed their dismissals, highlighting the severity of the situation. Warner Bros. remains silent on these recent developments, mirroring their response to the September layoffs.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's financial underperformance, reported by Warner Bros. in February, proved costly for both Rocksteady and its parent company, WB Games. The game's failure to meet sales expectations directly contributed to the staff reductions.
This isn't an isolated incident within WB Games. WB Games Montreal, the studio behind Gotham Knights, also announced layoffs in December, with many reportedly from the QA team supporting Suicide Squad's post-launch content. The final DLC, featuring Deathstroke, launched on December 10th. With one last update planned for later this month, Rocksteady's future remains uncertain following the conclusion of support for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The game's underperformance casts a shadow over Rocksteady's otherwise impressive track record of critically acclaimed DC games.
