Sony Removes PSN Account Requirement for Select PC Games

Sony has announced a significant change in its approach to PC gaming, revealing that players will no longer need to link a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to enjoy some of its popular titles on PC. This policy shift, detailed in a recent PlayStation.Blog post, will start with the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC tomorrow. This move comes in response to feedback from the gaming community, which has been vocal about the inconvenience of the PSN account requirement. Several previously released PC ports will also benefit from this change, including Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. However, it remains uncertain how this will affect other single-player-focused PC ports like Until Dawn or Days Gone.

Despite dropping the mandatory PSN account linkage, Sony is keen on encouraging PC gamers to join its online ecosystem. The company has announced enticing incentives for those who choose to connect their PSN accounts. For instance, players of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 can unlock special suits early, such as the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit. Similarly, God of War Ragnarök players can gain access to the Armor of the Black Bear set for Kratos at the first Lost Items chest in the Realm Between Realms, along with a resource bundle containing 500 Hacksilver and 250 XP. The Last of Us Part II Remastered offers +50 points to unlock bonus features and the Jordan’s Jacket skin for Ellie, while Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered players can access the Nora Valiant outfit. Sony plans to collaborate with developers across PlayStation Studios to introduce more benefits for those who sign up for a PSN account. Additionally, connecting an account provides access to features like trophy support and friend management.

The response to Sony's presence on PC has been varied. While many gamers appreciate the opportunity to experience titles previously exclusive to consoles, the mandatory PSN account requirement drew criticism, particularly from players in regions where PSN is not available. The issue came to a head with the Helldivers 2 community last May when PlayStation announced that Steam users would need to connect a PSN account to play. This decision was quickly reversed due to significant backlash, reflecting the ongoing dialogue between Sony and its PC gaming audience.
