Sarah Michelle Gellar to Return in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot
It looks like Buffy might be slaying again at Hulu, and fans of the iconic series are buzzing with excitement.
According to Variety, a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the works at Hulu, with the original star Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her role as the legendary vampire-slaying hunter. While the new series will focus on a different Slayer, Gellar is expected to appear as a recurring character, adding a thrilling layer of continuity to the beloved franchise.
Adding to the anticipation, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao, acclaimed for her work on Nomadland and Eternals, is in talks to helm the project as both director and executive producer. The writing and showrunning duties will be handled by Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman, ensuring a fresh yet respectful take on the Buffy universe. Notably, original series creator Joss Whedon will not be involved in this reboot, following allegations of fostering a toxic work environment during the original series and its spinoff, Angel.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the core concept of the reboot will revolve around a new Slayer. The original series, which aired from 1997 to 2003 over seven seasons, followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen by fate to fight demons, vampires, and other supernatural beings. Alongside Buffy were her loyal friends Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, as well as her Watcher, Rupert Giles.
The legacy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer extended beyond its television run, spawning a spinoff, Angel, and continuing through a series of canonical comic books. With Hulu's potential reboot, fans can look forward to a new chapter in the Buffyverse, enriched by the return of Sarah Michelle Gellar and the creative vision of Chloé Zhao and the Zuckerman sisters.
