RuneScape: Dragonwilds caught everyone off guard with its early access announcement. On April 16, during a livestream, developer Jagex revealed that the game is now accessible in early access on Steam, only a few weeks after its first trailer was released.

The gaming community was astounded, as Dragonwilds had just been listed for wishlisting on Steam on April 1 and showcased its first gameplay teaser on April 2. Initially introduced in 2022, the game's alpha testing signups opened late in 2024 for a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The official unveiling of RuneScape: Dragonwilds happened on March 31, 2025.

Jagex has set their sights on an early 2026 release for Dragonwilds. The team emphasized their commitment to perfection, stating, "We want to spend the time to get everything right to ensure our players enjoy a complete, satisfying experience that you’ll want to return to with friends time and again."

Jesse America, Jagex's Executive Producer, highlighted that Dragonwilds represents a fresh take on the RuneScape universe, designed to captivate both long-time fans and newcomers. He added, "Throughout Early Access, we’ll be rolling out regular updates with new content and features, all while taking community feedback into account to craft an iconic open-world survival crafting game beloved by all."

Early Access Roadmap Revealed

Jagex has shared an exciting early access roadmap for Dragonwilds, outlining the future updates players can anticipate. A highlight is the introduction of Fellhollow, a new region teetering between life and death, ruled by the soul-eater dragon Imaru. This area is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld, with the iconic RuneScape character Death guiding players through new quests, lore, gear, and music. New skills in magic, ranged, and farming will also be introduced.

Moreover, the game will feature new Lesser Dragons, dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, and a creative mode. Although specific release dates for these updates haven't been set, Jagex promises ongoing enhancements throughout the early access phase.
