Pokémon TCG Pocket Dev Offers Trade Tokens, Yet Struggles with Controversial Feature Fix

In a recent move, Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket developer Creatures Inc. has distributed 1,000 Trade Tokens to players, sufficient for only two major trades. This action comes as the developer continues to explore solutions for the contentious trading mechanic that has stirred significant controversy within the community.

Upon logging in today, players will discover the Trade Tokens in their Gift menu, although no accompanying message was provided. Creatures Inc. took to X/Twitter to express gratitude for the feedback and patience shown by fans. The trading feature, introduced last week, drew sharp criticism, with the developer being labeled "hilariously toxic," "predatory," and "downright greedy" due to its restrictive nature.

The standard Pokémon TCG Pocket system already limits players from freely opening packs or using the Wonder Picking feature without spending real money. The addition of trading further compounded these restrictions, with Trade Tokens acting as an additional barrier. Players have voiced frustration over the high cost of these tokens, which require them to sacrifice five cards from their collection just to trade one card of the same rarity.

It has been eight days since the trading feature was released to a wave of backlash, but Creatures Inc. had already received indications of fan dissatisfaction nearly three weeks prior when it initially announced the feature. The developer acknowledged the concerns, stating, "Your concerns are seen. Once this feature becomes available, I'd like to invite everyone to try it and provide feedback."

Despite hopes that the feature would be more user-friendly, the reality fell short of expectations. Creatures Inc. later conceded that "some of the restrictions put in place are preventing players from being able to casually enjoy" trading. The company promised to address these complaints by offering required items as rewards in upcoming events. However, the recent Cresselia ex Drop Event, which began on February 3, did not include these promised rewards, further disappointing the community.

Many fans believe that the trading system is primarily designed to boost revenue for Pokémon TCG Pocket, which reportedly earned $200 million in its first month before the trading feature was introduced. This suspicion is reinforced by the restriction on trading cards of 2 Star rarity or higher. Without this limitation, players could easily trade for the cards they need, reducing the necessity to spend real money on packs for a chance at obtaining them. For instance, one player reportedly spent around $1,500 just to complete the first set, while the third set in three months was released last week.
