Play Games in Portrait Mode with New Tate Mode Mini Controller!
If you're a gamer, you've probably tried playing vertical arcade games on your phone and found the experience less than satisfying. A modder named Max Kern has devised an innovative solution to this long-standing issue with his new Tate mode mini controller. But the real question is: does it truly resolve the problem?
Traditional controllers are designed for landscape mode, similar to those used with a Switch or Steam Deck. However, classic vertical shooters and retro games often require you to hold your phone in portrait mode, much like you would when scrolling through Instagram.
To address this, Max Kern created a compact USB-C gamepad tailored specifically for portrait-mode, or Tate mode, gaming. This controller connects directly to your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.
Max constructed the Tate Mode mini controller using a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip and 3D-printed the case and buttons via JLCPCB. Enthusiasts can replicate this project by following his detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

What’s Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller?
The controller utilizes the GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac devices. This versatility is impressive, considering its small size.
However, the design might put strain on the USB-C port as the gamepad supports part of the phone's weight. Users would need to hold both the phone and the controller to prevent potential damage to the connector over time.
On Reddit, opinions are mixed. Some users admire the ingenuity but express concerns about potential hand cramps, while others find the design more acceptable.
It's worth noting that this isn't a commercial product but rather a DIY project. Max has shared all the necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and Github, making it accessible for others to try.
