Outer Worlds 2: Dev Progress Smooth in Obsidian's Busy Period
Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart recently provided an update on the development of The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed, revealing smooth progress despite past challenges.
Obsidian's Confidence in Upcoming Releases
According to Urquhart, *The Outer Worlds 2* development is progressing well. He praised the dedicated team, many of whom worked on the first game, highlighting their understanding of the project.Urquhart candidly discussed the hurdles faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and post-Microsoft acquisition. Juggling multiple projects, including Grounded and Pentiment, significantly strained resources. He acknowledged a period of intense pressure, even mentioning internal discussions about potentially halting The Outer Worlds 2 to focus on Avowed. However, the studio persevered, ultimately continuing development across all titles.
"We were acquired, then COVID hit, and we were simultaneously finishing Outer Worlds, its DLC, pushing Avowed forward, starting Outer Worlds 2, Grounded, and Josh was working on Pentiment," Urquhart recalled, illustrating the demanding period.
Despite the challenges, Urquhart expressed satisfaction with the outcomes, noting the success of Grounded and Pentiment, and the promising progress on Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. While specific gameplay details weren't shared, the delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other projects.
Initially announced in 2021, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen limited updates. Urquhart acknowledged this and the possibility of a release delay, similar to Avowed. However, he reaffirmed Obsidian's commitment to delivering high-quality games. "We'll deliver on all these games," he stated. "Will they meet our initial timelines? No. But we'll get there, and that's been proven." Both games are slated for PC and Xbox Series S/X.
