"Oblivion Remake Set for Soon Reveal and Release"
Excitement is building as Bethesda is reportedly gearing up to announce a remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in the coming weeks, with a release soon to follow. The insider NatetheHate, known for his accurate prediction of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement date, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share that the reveal could happen this month or next month, a claim that has been backed by VGC. While the exact release window remains a bit unclear, NatetheHate suggests it might be before June, whereas VGC hints at a potential launch as early as April.
Back in January, Mp1st uncovered what appeared to be prematurely disclosed details about the Oblivion remake from a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio. Microsoft chose not to comment on the matter when approached by IGN. According to Mp1st, Virtuos has utilized Unreal Engine 5 for a comprehensive overhaul of Bethesda’s cherished open-world RPG, suggesting a full remake rather than a simple remaster. The report also touched on various gameplay adjustments, including modifications to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reactions, and the HUD.
The changes to Blocking were inspired by action games and Soulslikes, aiming to address the original's "boring" and "frustrating" mechanics. Sneak icons are now reportedly more visible, and damage calculations have been updated. The knockdown effect from depleted Stamina is said to be more challenging to trigger, and the HUD has been revamped for better clarity. Additionally, hit reactions have been introduced for more responsive gameplay, and Archery has been updated for both first and third-person views.
Rumors of an Oblivion remaster first surfaced in 2023, thanks to documents from the FTC vs. Microsoft trial regarding the Activision Blizzard acquisition. These documents, dated from July 2020, outlined a slate of unannounced Bethesda projects planned for release over several years, including an Oblivion Remaster slated for the 2022 financial year. Other titles on the list faced delays or cancellations, such as Doom Year Zero, now known as Doom: The Dark Ages with a May release, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which didn't launch until December 2024. The Elder Scrolls 6 also missed its projected 2024 financial year.
The term "remaster" used in the Microsoft document for Oblivion suggests the project's scope might have evolved into a more ambitious remake. As anticipation grows, Bethesda is expected to shed light on this much-discussed project soon.
With Microsoft now committed to multiplatform releases and the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, the Oblivion remake might not be exclusive to PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. If the Switch 2 launches around June, there's a chance that Oblivion could be part of its launch lineup, expanding its reach to a broader audience.
