In the cinematic universe of superheroes, every hero needs a formidable antagonist, and for Captain America: Brave New World, that role is filled by The Leader, portrayed by actor Tim Blake Nelson. Fans were introduced to a character whose appearance was enhanced through practical effects and makeup, showcasing visible mutations. However, the final design deviated from the traditional comic book look, sparking interest in the original concept.

Blue Whale Studios, the Atlanta-based special effects company responsible for The Leader's design and effects in the MCU film, recently unveiled their initial vision for Sam Sterns’ alter ego. This original take was much closer to the comic book version, featuring a sickly appearance with an engorged head and pale green skin. Although the design lacked the intricate mutation details seen in the final film, it resonated well with the character’s comic origins. Blue Whale Studios shared this concept, along with a behind-the-scenes video of the prosthetics application on Nelson, on their Instagram.

"We were originally brought on to design and apply the practical makeup for The Leader on the incomparable Tim Blake Nelson in Captain America: Brave New World," Blue Whale Studios explained. "As often happens in film, the story evolved, and during reshoots, the creative direction shifted. Our version was ultimately not used in the final cut. Still, we remain incredibly proud of the work we created."

The studio emphasized their dedication to creating a design that was both grounded and iconic, drawing inspiration directly from the original comic book art. They achieved a look that was true to the source material while maintaining a refined, natural realism. The lightweight and comfortable nature of the final makeup was a testament to the team's hard work and dedication.

This original design closely resembled The Leader’s first appearance in the Marvel comic universe, introduced in 1964’s Tales to Astonish #62. Interestingly, the final design in Brave New World aligns more with the character's recent portrayals in 2018's Immortal Hulk.

The seeds for The Leader's MCU villainy were planted as early as 2008 in The Incredible Hulk, where Sam Sterns was exposed to Bruce Banner’s Gamma radiation-infused blood. Initially a normal human, this exposure set the stage for his transformation into The Leader by the time of Brave New World.

Last May, reports surfaced that Captain America: Brave New World was undergoing reshoots to introduce a new villainous character played by Giancarlo Esposito, known for his roles in Breaking Bad, Star Wars, and The Boys. Esposito portrays Sidewinder, the leader of the Serpent Society, in the film.

In the lead-up to the film's release, five-time WWE world champion Seth Rollins confirmed that his role was cut following extensive rewrites of the script and subsequent reshoots.
