"Gran Saga Shutting Down Next Month"
NPIXEL has officially announced the closure of Gran Saga, marking the end of its brief international journey. The service will cease on April 30th, 2025, and in-app purchases (IAPs) along with downloads have already been disabled.
Gran Saga enjoyed a successful launch in Japan back in 2021, but its global debut in November 2024 was short-lived, lasting only six months. The decision to shut down stems from financial challenges and the inability to sustain a viable service in the fiercely competitive global market.
The mobile gaming landscape is dominated by established titles with loyal fanbases, making it extremely challenging for new games to break through without offering something revolutionary. Despite its initial triumph in Japan, Gran Saga couldn't replicate that success on the international stage, leading to its premature closure.
This closure reflects a broader trend of gacha RPGs struggling to survive in an oversaturated market. Just last month, I reported on the shutdown of My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero, which was not an isolated incident. Many similar games have also succumbed to market pressures, as players tend to stick with familiar titles, making it difficult for new or niche games to maintain a long-term presence.
For those who recently made purchases in Gran Saga and are seeking refunds, you have until May 30th to submit your request. Please note that refunds may not be possible if the purchased items have already been used or due to other store policies.
If you've spent time in the world of Ethprozen, this farewell is undoubtedly bittersweet, but it's a scenario increasingly common in the mobile gaming industry.
