Fincher, Pitt Team Up for 'Hollywood' Sequel on Netflix

David Fincher and Brad Pitt are set to collaborate once again, this time to bring to life a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. According to The Playlist, the duo is working on an unexpected project slated for Netflix, continuing Fincher's successful partnership with the streaming service. If all goes as planned, the untitled sequel will feature Brad Pitt reprising his role as the stuntman Cliff Booth.

The screenplay, which Fincher acquired, is an evolved version of a story originally titled The Movie Critic. This project was initially intended to be Tarantino's final film but was shelved last year. However, Tarantino's passion for the story led him to entrust it to Fincher for development.

The Playlist reports that Netflix has acquired the screenplay for $20 million, with a projected budget of $200 million. Filming is expected to commence in California in July. While no additional casting has been confirmed, it's noted that Leonardo DiCaprio will not return as Rick Dalton. Both Fincher and Pitt are reportedly dedicating their full attention to this project.

Deadline has confirmed The Playlist's report, adding that Pitt received Tarantino's approval to present the script to Fincher, paving the way for this surprising sequel.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, released in 2019, was a critical success and is considered a standout in Tarantino's filmography. The sequel faces the challenge of living up to its predecessor, which had a definitive ending. However, the world of the original film has been further explored in Tarantino's 2021 novelization, which delves deeper into the 1960s California setting and provides insights into Cliff Booth's backstory, including the unresolved question of whether he killed his wife.
