Deadlock Dev Enhances Matchmaking using ChatGPT
Valve's upcoming MOBA-hero shooter, Deadlock, recently underwent a matchmaking system overhaul. Interestingly, a key component of this revamp—the algorithm itself—was discovered with the assistance of ChatGPT, as revealed by Valve engineer Fletcher Dunn on Twitter (X). Dunn's tweets showcased his conversation with ChatGPT, which ultimately recommended the Hungarian algorithm.
Addressing Player Concerns
Deadlock's previous MMR matchmaking faced significant criticism from players. Reddit threads highlighted complaints about unevenly matched teams, with experienced players frequently pitted against significantly less skilled opponents. Players voiced frustration about facing highly skilled adversaries while their own teammates lacked comparable experience. One player commented, "I never had better/equally skilled teammates," echoing the widespread sentiment.
Responding to this feedback, a Deadlock developer announced a complete matchmaking system rewrite on the game's Discord server. Dunn's use of ChatGPT to identify the Hungarian algorithm accelerated this process.
Dunn expressed his amazement with ChatGPT's capabilities, stating that it had become an invaluable tool, constantly open in a dedicated Chrome tab. He actively shares his successful uses of the AI, aiming to counter skepticism regarding its potential. However, he also acknowledged a potential downside: the replacement of human interaction in problem-solving. This sparked debate, with some arguing that the fear of AI replacing programmers is overblown.
How the Algorithm Works
Algorithms process data based on predefined parameters. In Deadlock's context, the Hungarian algorithm, as chosen by ChatGPT, addresses a specific need: optimizing matches where only one side (e.g., a player's team) has preferences. This ensures fairer and more balanced gameplay.
Mixed Reactions
Despite the improvements, some players remain unhappy with Deadlock's matchmaking, attributing their negative experiences to the ChatGPT-assisted changes. Comments ranged from expressing disappointment to outright anger.
Game8, however, remains optimistic about Deadlock's potential, anticipating a positive impact from the updated matchmaking system. Further details on our playtest experience can be found in [link to Game8 article].
