Marvel Rivals Fans Mod Game Despite Ban Risk
Despite an official crackdown with Season 1, some Marvel Rivals players are still risking account bans by using character mods.
Since its successful launch in December, players have used mods to create custom character skins, despite knowing it could lead to bans. Popular modifications include transforming Iron Man into Dragon Ball's Vegeta, giving Mantis a gothic makeover, and even turning Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita from Chainsaw Man.
Last week, coinciding with the Fantastic Four update and Season 1, Marvel Rivals quietly introduced asset hash checking to restrict mods. Developer NetEase informed IGN that its terms of service prohibit mods, cheats, bots, hacks, and any other unauthorized third-party software. NetEase had previously advised players that modifying game files is not recommended and carries a ban risk, a warning it reiterated in its statement.

Nevertheless, some players remain undeterred. A new workaround has been discovered and shared online. While more complex than previous methods, it is still feasible for most PC users.
Modder Prafit, who uploaded the workaround to Nexus Mods, cautioned players: “Use at your own risk.” They added, “This tool bypasses the new anti-modding system introduced in the Season 1 patch. While NetEase has never issued permanent bans to our knowledge, no one can guarantee your account's safety.”
New mods have already emerged featuring the Fantastic Four. For instance, one mod by Ercuallo transforms Mister Fantastic into Luffy from One Piece. According to Nexus Mods statistics, this Luffy mod was downloaded over 5,000 times in its first two days.

The central question for the modding community is whether NetEase will follow through on its threat to ban players. No confirmed cases of bans for modding have surfaced yet, but the new workarounds could prompt a stronger response.
Why would NetEase want to stop mods? Beyond the potential loss of skin sales revenue and intellectual property concerns, modifications can disrupt game balance and performance. Modder Prafit even warned that their temporary fix should only be used on powerful PCs.
