Gearbox Software, the developer behind Borderlands 4, has not yet confirmed an official launch date for the game's Switch 2 edition. However, a product listing on Portuguese retailer GamingReplay hints that an announcement is imminent. Following a postponement from its original October 3, 2025, release, this looter-shooter may arrive on the Nintendo console on February 27.

The GamingReplay website lists Borderlands 4 as a Game Key Card set to launch on February 27, 2026, priced at €69.99—approximately $80 USD.

Last September, less than a week before the anticipated Switch 2 launch, Gearbox announced an indefinite delay for Borderlands 4 on the console. Citing the critical nature of cross-save functionality and their dedication to providing "the best possible experience to our fans," they decided to allocate additional development and polish time after careful consideration.

Notably, Borderlands 4 faced criticism from players due to performance issues on PC. Upon its Steam release on September 12, 2025, reviews highlighted poor optimization, including bugs, crashes, and stuttering. These problems became a major point of contention among users, despite the game receiving positive feedback for gameplay and an Metacritic score of 81.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford also faced backlash last year for his responses to player complaints regarding these optimization issues. In a Twitter (X) thread, he suggested that dissatisfied customers should "get a refund from Steam."

Player Expectations for Switch 2 Port Remain Low

On Reddit and Twitter (X), players are displaying limited optimism regarding the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4, regardless of whether the reported release date is accurate. Given their largely unsatisfactory experiences with the looter-shooter on PC as well as PS5 and Xbox, fans are already tempering their expectations for smooth performance on the new console.

Furthermore, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney previously explained why games built on Unreal Engine 5, such as Borderlands 4, struggle to optimize effectively on Switch 2. During Unreal Fest 2025 in Seoul, South Korea, last August, he attributed the issue to "the sequence of the development process" rather than the engine itself.

"Many development studios create their games based on high-end hardware specifications, and only perform optimization and low-end device testing during the final stages of development," Sweeney explained. He noted that optimization should ideally occur before "full-scale content building begins."

He also proposed two solutions to this challenge: enhancing Unreal Engine's built-in support tools and improving developer education by emphasizing that "optimization must happen early."

Borderlands 4 C4SH DLC

In the meantime, Gearbox has announced a new Vault Hunter DLC launching in the first quarter of 2026. The former dealer-bot, C4SH, will join the Borderlands 4 roster alongside Mad Ellie and the Story DLC for Vault of the Damned.

Borderlands 4 is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a Switch 2 release coming soon. For the latest updates on Borderlands 4, please refer to our article below.
