Gordang Sambilan is a traditional art form of the Batak Mandailing people. "Gordang" means drum or large drum, while "sambilan" means nine. Gordang Sambilan consists of nine drums or large drums of varying lengths and diameters, which produce different tones. Typically played by six individuals, the smallest drums, numbers 1 and 2, are known as taba-taba; drum 3 is called tepe-tepe; drum 4 is kudong-kudong; drum 5 is kudong-kudong nabalik; drum 6 is pasilion; and drums 7, 8, and 9 are referred to as jangat. Historically, Gordang Sambilan was performed only during sacred ceremonies. However, with the evolution of social culture, it is now commonly played at weddings, to welcome guests, and during major celebrations. As a cultural heritage of Indonesia, Gordang Sambilan has even been performed at the presidential palace.
