Key Terms in Phom and Ta La

- Phom: A combination of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, or three cards sharing the same rank.

- Junk Cards: Unmatched cards that do not form part of any valid phom set.

- Ù (Win): Achieved when a player completes exactly three phoms with no junk cards remaining, securing an absolute victory.

- Stomach (Stockpile): The deck of undealt cards placed face-down in the center after distribution.

- Mom: A state where the game concludes without any player forming a valid phom.

- Take the Pin: Occurs when a player claims another player's discarded card on their turn.

- Send: On the final turn, if your remaining junk card can complete an opponent’s existing phom, you may send it; this card is excluded from point calculations at game end.

- Compensation: If Player A takes Player B’s pin and later achieves Ù (win), any subsequent player who also wins must compensate Player A for the taken pin. The next winner after that will pay both players accordingly. Additionally, obtaining three consecutive cards of the same suit triggers compensation rules as well.

- Re: After playing a card, if another player at the table forms a phom using it, your played cards are returned to you, allowing an extra turn.

How to Play Phom – Ta La

- Each match involves 2–4 players. Most participants receive nine cards each, while the dealer (or reigning winner) gets ten. Remaining cards form the stockpile ("Studs") placed centrally face-down.

- Gameplay proceeds counter-clockwise, beginning with the player holding ten cards.

- Turn Mechanics:

+ The first player discards any card; others may claim it if it completes a phom or draw one from the stockpile otherwise.

+ After claiming/drawing, players discard one card per turn until someone achieves Ù (win). If no win occurs within four rounds, points are tallied to decide the winner.

- Final Turn Protocol: Players must reveal all completed phoms before sending eligible junk cards to opponents’ sets, then play their last card. Remaining junk cards determine final scores.

Scoring Junk Cards When No One Wins (Ù):

+ Lowest score wins overall.

+ Card Values: A = 1 point; J = 11 points; Q = 12 points; K = 13 points. Numbered cards retain face value.

- Tiebreaker Rules: In case of equal scores, the player who finishes first claims victory.

- Final Score Adjustments:

+ First Place Winner: +6 points

+ Second Place: -1 point

+ Third Place: -2 points

+ Fourth Place (Last Runner-Up): -3 points

+ Player Who Took Pin: -4 points

+ Player Who Was Taken From: +4 points

+ Ù (Win) or Khan Win: +15 total points deducted equally among all opponents (-5 each).

- Burned/Burnt Penalty: Loser pays winner 4 additional points.
