Travis Willingham: Critical Role Video Game Announcement Imminent

Excitement is building around the popular Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, as they gear up to unveil their first major video game. CEO Travis Willingham has hinted that an announcement could be made "any day" now. This news came to light during an insightful interview with Business Insider, where Willingham shared the team's ambitious plans for the future. While details about the game's title and its integration into the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham assured fans that the development team is diligently working to bring this project to life.

Willingham elaborated on the interactive nature of the upcoming game, saying, "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria." This suggests a deeply immersive experience where players can influence the narrative within the expansive world of Critical Role.

Willingham, a seasoned actor and one of the show's stars, co-founded Critical Role alongside other notable voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and more. From its humble beginnings, Critical Role has evolved into a vast universe of storytelling, with a significant milestone being its successful Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The forthcoming video game will complement Critical Role's existing projects but may not directly tie in with them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham revealed that the team was in "active pursuit" of creating a Critical Role video game spinoff, noting they were "starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve been undertaking for the last couple of years." It remains to be seen whether the game will follow one of the group's established campaigns or introduce an original narrative within the Critical Role world.

The team had anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. As we progress into the third month of 2025, the anticipation for the game's reveal continues to mount. Willingham also discussed the challenges and opportunities in the interactive entertainment industry, stating to Rolling Stone, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
