Tencent Acquires Majority Stake in Kuro Games

Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, has reportedly secured a majority stake in Kuro Games, the studio behind the popular titles Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition significantly alters the landscape for both companies.

Tencent's Increased Ownership

Tencent's shareholding in Kuro Games has jumped to approximately 51.4%, achieved through the acquisition of roughly 37% additional shares. This surpasses the 50% threshold, granting Tencent controlling interest and making it the sole external shareholder. This follows an initial investment made in 2023.

Maintaining Operational Independence

Despite this significant ownership shift, Kuro Games assures continued operational independence. Sources within Kuro Games, cited by Chinese news outlet Youxi Putao, suggest a model similar to Tencent's relationships with Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games' official statement emphasizes that this acquisition will foster a "more stable external environment" and support its long-term independent strategy. Tencent has yet to publicly comment.

Kuro Games' Success and Future Prospects

Kuro Games' success is undeniable, with both Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves generating over $120 million USD in revenue each. Wuthering Waves, in particular, has garnered significant attention, even receiving a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards. This acquisition positions Kuro Games for further growth and expansion under Tencent's umbrella.
