Sony Removes PS3 Classics Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 from PS5, PS4 in Major PS Plus Overhaul

Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see the removal of 22 games from the service's library, including high-profile titles such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of Sony's first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. These removals are set to take effect on May 20, 2025.

PlayStation Plus is a premium online gaming service for PlayStation platforms, offering a range of benefits to its members. These include free monthly games, limited-time trials, access to online multiplayer, member-exclusive discounts, and a vast catalog of hundreds of current and classic games available to Extra and Premium members.

As highlighted by Push Square, the upcoming departure of these 22 games includes two notable first-party Sony PS3 games, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, which are exiting the PS Plus Premium library. This move is particularly significant because these games are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store, making the PS Plus Premium streaming service the last option for players to experience them—unless they own the games and a functional PS3.

The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac Games, is a set of alternate history first-person shooters that followed the studio's successful Ratchet and Clank franchise. The series saw three releases on the PS3 before Insomniac shifted focus to other projects like Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles. Both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 were added to the PS Plus library at the end of 2024, making their removal less than a year later quite surprising.

While it's rare for Sony to remove its first-party titles from PlayStation Plus, precedents exist. For example, the unexpected removal of both Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West in August 2024 caused a stir among fans. Unlike those titles, which remained available for purchase, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will no longer be accessible on modern consoles once they are removed from the service.

Interestingly, other entries in the Resistance series, such as Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution, will continue to be available on PlayStation Plus. Additionally, the PS4 title InFamous: Second Son is also slated for removal from the service.

Insomniac's Resistance series has been on hiatus for some time. In February, Insomniac founder and outgoing president Ted Price disclosed efforts to develop Resistance 4, which unfortunately did not come to fruition. Like Guerrilla Games' Killzone series, the Resistance franchise has taken a backseat in recent years.
