Smash Bros. Dating App Receives Cease-and-Desist Order

Smash Together, an unofficial dating platform created for passionate Super Smash Bros. players to connect and interact, has reportedly received a cease-and-desist letter just hours before its planned open beta launch.

Originally scheduled to go live today, May 15, the app had been in development for several months. However, on May 13, the official Smash Together Twitter account posted a melancholic Yoshi meme accompanied by the message: "We got cease and desisted." (Tip of the hat to Automaton for catching this.)

While the developers did not disclose the sender of the legal notice, many assume it came from Nintendo, given the app’s direct association with the Super Smash Bros. franchise.

Smash Together branded itself as the “premium dating site for Super Smash Bros. fans of all kinds,” offering users the chance to find their ideal “Doubles partner—both inside and outside of Smash.” The app promised a matchmaking system designed to pair users with compatible fellow players based on shared gaming interests and preferences.

Preview screenshots showed features such as listing your main character, highlighting impressive match wins, and responding to prompts like those seen in mainstream dating apps—but all tailored with a Super Smash Bros. flair. One example read: “I’m looking for… someone who can make it out of pools at a major.”

PlayBeyond potential trademark and copyright concerns, the very concept of a dating app built around a high-profile game series like Super Smash Bros. may have raised enough red flags for the issuer of the cease-and-desist.

As of now, there has been no official update from the Smash Together team regarding whether they plan to pivot the idea into a more generalized gaming-based dating platform or rebrand entirely without referencing Smash Bros.

Until then, kudos to me for resisting the urge to make any “smashing” puns. You're welcome.
