The Last of Us Season 2's Abby Didn't Bulk Up Because HBO Didn't Need to Emulate Certain Video Game Mechanics, Neil Druckmann Says

The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part II will portray Abby differently than her video game counterpart. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the same physical build because the show prioritizes drama over replicating the game's mechanics. Druckmann notes that the game required distinct gameplay for Ellie and Abby—Ellie more agile, Abby a brute—but the show's focus shifts the emphasis. While action remains, the narrative prioritizes character development.

Fellow showrunner Craig Mazin adds that this allows for exploring a more physically vulnerable yet spiritually strong Abby. The show will delve into the origins of her formidable nature and how it manifests. This suggests a multi-season arc for Abby's story, unlike Season 1's adaptation of the first game. Mazin hints at a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes in Season 2, leaving room for future seasons.

The intense fan reaction to Abby in the game, including harassment of Naughty Dog employees and even threats against actress Laura Bailey, has not gone unnoticed. HBO took precautions, providing extra security for Kaitlyn Dever. Actress Isabel Merced, who plays Dina, reminds viewers that Abby is a fictional character, emphasizing the absurdity of the real-world animosity.
