Dark/Dragon-type Hydreigon stands out as one of the most formidable Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, making it a must-have for any serious trainer's Pokedex. To harness its full potential, you'll first need to capture its pre-evolved forms, Deino and Zweilous. From there, you can evolve the Irate Deino into the Brutal Hydreigon. Keep in mind, however, that Deino and its evolutions are exclusive to Pokemon Scarlet. If you're playing Pokemon Violet, you'll need to explore other methods to acquire them.

Updated January 13, 2025 by Renri Seong: The Dark/Dragon-type Deino evolves into the powerful pseudo-legendary Hydreigon. Originally introduced in Generation 5 with Pokemon Black/White, the Deino line has been a staple in mainline titles, including Pokemon Scarlet/Violet. As with every new generation, Deino and its evolutions are version-exclusive; you can catch them in the wild in Pokemon Scarlet but will need to trade to obtain one in Pokemon Violet. With a variety of pseudo-legendary Pokemon available in Scarlet/Violet, you might be wondering if Hydreigon is still a worthwhile choice. This revamped guide includes new insights on Hydreigon, detailing its stats and type effectiveness.

Where to Catch Deino in Pokemon Scarlet

Deino and Zweilous Locations

In Pokemon Scarlet, Deino can be found in several key locations: Alfornada Cavern, Dalizapa Passage, Glaseado Mountain, Area Zero, and North Province (Area Two). While Glaseado Mountain, Area Zero, and North Province (Area Two) are straightforward and easily accessible, Alfornada Cavern and Dalizapa Passage might require a bit more exploration. Deinos in Dalizapa Passage and Alfornada Cavern are between levels 35-40.

  • Alfornada Cavern: Located in the southwest corner of the Paldea map, you'll need Koraidon's high jump ability to navigate through the cave.
  • Dalizapa Passage: Accessible by heading east from Medali or west from Zapapico. On the map, it's the area between these two locations.

Additionally, Deino can be obtained from 3-star Tera Raids, which become available once you've earned three gym badges. Deinos from these raids may have different Tera Types than those found in the wild and might also possess their Hidden Ability.

Zweilous, Deino's evolved form, can also be found in the wild at Dalizapa Passage, Area Zero, and Alfornada Cavern. Like Deino, Zweilous can be obtained from Tera Raids, specifically from 4-star Tera Raids.

Hydreigon, on the other hand, can be encountered in 5/6-star Tera Raids.

How to Get Deino in Pokemon Violet

How to Trade and Transfer

Since the Deino line is exclusive to Pokemon Scarlet, players of Pokemon Violet must resort to trading or transferring to obtain one. For trading, you'll need a Nintendo Switch Online Membership to access the Union Circle. If you prefer not to subscribe, consider using Pokemon HOME to transfer Deino from another game to Pokemon Violet.

To transfer using HOME, ensure you have the HOME app installed on your Switch. Deino and its evolutions can be transferred from Pokemon Sword/Shield, Pokemon GO, and Pokemon Scarlet.

  1. Open Pokemon HOME, select the game from which you have Deino, and move it to your Basic Box. Save and exit.
  2. Within HOME, open Pokemon Violet and transfer Deino from the Basic Box to a PC Box. Save and exit.

How to Evolve Deino into Zweilous and Hydreigon

What Level Does Deino Evolve?

Deino evolves into Zweilous at level 50, and Zweilous evolves into Hydreigon at level 64. To expedite the leveling process, you can set Deino/Zweilous to auto-battle large groups of Pokemon. Alternatively, you can use Exp. Candies or Rare Candies. Exp. Candy L and Exp. Candy XL are particularly effective due to Deino's high evolution thresholds.

Hydreigon Stats & Weaknesses

As a pseudo-legendary, Hydreigon ranks among the strongest Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. With a base stat total of 600, it boasts high Special Attack and Attack with commendable Speed, making it versatile for both physical and special attacks. Ideal natures for Hydreigon include Timid (+Spd, -Attk) or Jolly (+Spd, -Sp.Attk).

As a Dark/Dragon-type, Hydreigon has the following type effectiveness:

EffectivenessTypes
Super-effective againstDragon, Ghost, Psychic
WeaknessesFairy (4x), Fighting, Bug, Dragon, Ice
ResistancesGrass, Water, Fire, Electric, Ghost, Dark
ImmunitiesGround, Psychic

Thanks to Terastallizing, Hydreigon can mitigate its severe Fairy-type weakness. Offensively, changing its Tera Type can enhance moves like Flash Cannon for STAB. Whether you opt for physical or special attacks, Hydreigon's diverse move pool accommodates both strategies.

However, its vulnerability to Fairy-type moves necessitates a Steel-type move in its arsenal. Flash Cannon, learned via TM, is the only Steel-type move available to Hydreigon, suggesting a preference for special attacking over physical. Other recommended moves include Nasty Plot to boost Special Attack, Dragon Pulse (or Draco Meteor), and Dark Pulse for a well-rounded offensive set.
