Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Character Returns in Future Fighting Games

Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in upcoming Capcom fighting games. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the possibility of their return in "a new game" is always open.

This renewed interest comes on the heels of the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a remastered collection of classic titles including Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This collection, Matsumoto suggests, offers a prime opportunity to reintroduce characters like Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon to a wider audience. These characters, originally featured in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, have seen only limited appearances in later games.

Matsumoto hinted that their future appearances could extend beyond the Versus series. He indicated that significant fan interest could lead to their inclusion in titles like Street Fighter 6 or other fighting games. The re-release of the classic titles, he explained, serves to expand the overall Capcom IP awareness and provides a richer wellspring of creative content for future development.

The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself has been a long-time goal for Capcom, involving years of negotiation with Marvel. Matsumoto also expressed Capcom's desire to create new Versus series entries and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with updated features. However, he stressed that these projects depend on various factors, including scheduling and collaborations with external partners.

Matsumoto emphasized that the immediate focus is on re-releasing classic titles to reignite community enthusiasm and gauge interest in these lesser-known characters before moving forward with any new projects. The success of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping Capcom's future plans for the franchise and its characters.
