Sonic Joins Magic: The Gathering Crossover

Magic: The Gathering continues its streak of exciting crossovers this year, following collaborations with SpongeBob and Deadpool, with Sonic the Hedgehog joining the lineup next month. The beloved blue blur is receiving three unique Secret Lair drops, and we're thrilled to exclusively showcase one featuring artifact-themed cards.

Unlike Magic's recent Final Fantasy expansion – which introduced a full draftable set plus four Commander decks – this Sonic collaboration follows the established Secret Lair format with three limited releases. These collector-focused drops feature curated selections of reprinted cards with exclusive alternate art, available exclusively through Wizards of the Coast rather than traditional booster packs.
The Turbo Gear collection includes six existing Magic cards creatively reinterpreted with Sonic-inspired aesthetics and names, plus one token card. Highlights include Commander format staples like Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves, perfectly reimagined as Sonic's iconic footwear. Notably, the legendary vehicle Weatherlight appears as Tornado – Sonic's trusty biplane – which can now legally serve as your Commander thanks to recent rules updates.
The designers at Wizards note this drop synergizes with another Sonic-themed Secret Lair focusing on characters. While specific details remain under wraps, Turbo Gear's description hints at exciting combinations – imagine equipping Knuckles's Gloves (a reskinned Reaver Cleaver) to Knuckles himself. This design philosophy mirrors previous crossovers like Tomb Raider, where reprinted cards naturally complement new Legendary creatures, effectively providing building blocks for custom Commander decks.
Mark your calendars – the Turbo Gear Secret Lair (along with its companion drops) launches July 14 at 9 AM PT through Magic's official storefront. Standard versions retail for $29.99 while foil editions cost $39.99. Given recent crossover sellouts, speed is of the essence as quantities will be strictly limited.
