Epic Unveils Unreal Engine 6: Metaverse Ambitions
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney envisions a massive, interconnected metaverse powered by Unreal Engine 6. This ambitious project aims to integrate major game ecosystems, including Fortnite and potentially Roblox and Minecraft, creating a shared marketplace and economy.
Sweeney, in an interview with The Verge, highlighted Epic's substantial financial resources, positioning them to execute this long-term vision. The core of this plan involves merging the power of Unreal Engine with the user-friendly interface of the Unreal Editor for Fortnite, resulting in a significantly enhanced Unreal Engine 6. This unified engine will allow developers, from AAA studios to indie creators, to deploy games across multiple platforms with ease.
This interoperability extends to in-game assets and economies. Epic is collaborating with Disney to create a seamlessly integrated Disney ecosystem within this larger metaverse. The goal is to foster a shared economy where digital purchases retain value across different games, encouraging players to invest more in virtual items. While discussions with Roblox and Microsoft haven't begun, Sweeney anticipates future collaborations.
Epic's executive VP, Saxs Persson, reinforces this vision, emphasizing the benefits of a federated metaverse allowing players to seamlessly transition between games like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite. This interconnectedness promotes longer playtime and increased engagement, creating a more vibrant and enduring gaming experience. The approach focuses on scaling up existing successful elements within Fortnite, rather than attempting complete market domination, acknowledging the diverse landscape of gaming ecosystems. The underlying principle is that increased interoperability and a shared economy will foster greater player trust and engagement, ultimately benefiting all involved.
