Elder Scrolls Online Finally Adds Subclasses After 11 Years of Fan Demand
The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has finally introduced a feature that fans have been eagerly awaiting for over a decade: subclasses. Dive in to discover how this new system works and what future updates have in store for the game.
Elder Scrolls Online Direct Updates
Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines
As The Elder Scrolls Online celebrates its 10th Anniversary, Zenimax Online Studios has unveiled exciting plans during ESO Direct 2025 on April 10. The long-requested feature of subclassing is set to revolutionize gameplay. For years, players have desired the ability to swap classes without starting anew, especially when new skill trees are introduced. Now, with the introduction of subclasses, players can mix and match skill lines without the need to reroll their characters.
To unlock this feature, players must reach level 50. Once achieved, they can retain one skill line from their base class and swap out two others with any of the six available classes. This flexibility opens up over 3000 combinations, allowing players to tailor their playstyle uniquely. ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in this new feature, noting that extensive testing has been conducted. Despite potential increases in Power Levels, the development team is satisfied with the balance.
Seasons of the Worm Cult
ZeniMax Online is shifting towards seasonal content to offer more experimental releases and address player feedback more effectively. Studio Director Matt Firor explained, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems. We'll do this in a different cadence, allowing us to broaden our focus and increase variety."
The new chapter, Seasons of the Worm Cult, is a 10-year sequel to the original Molag Bal storyline. Players will explore the new Isle of Solstice zone to investigate the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath noted that while Seasons of the Worm Cult will last most of the year, future seasons are planned to run for 3 to 6 months. The developers also teased "remix" seasons, revisiting previous storylines, with a Dark Brotherhood-themed season on the horizon.
