Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!

The highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has arrived, and the player response has been phenomenal, especially regarding the modding scene. The sheer volume of mods is staggering.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke announced on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th release. "Modding is pretty big," Vincke stated. This figure was later surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over 3 million installs and counting.

This explosion in mod usage is largely due to Patch 7's inclusion of Larian's own Mod Manager. This in-game tool simplifies browsing, installing, and managing community-created mods. Prior to Patch 7, modding tools were available as a separate Steam application, allowing modders to craft their own content using Larian's Osiris scripting language. This toolkit enables custom script loading and basic debugging, with direct mod publishing capabilities.

Enhanced Modding Capabilities

PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) that unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted features within Larian's editor. While Larian initially limited access to its development tools, stating they are "a game development company, not a tools company," the community's ingenuity is clearly evident.

Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon

Larian Studios is actively developing cross-platform modding support, a significant undertaking according to Vincke, who noted the complexities of ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. The PC version will lead the way, with console support following after necessary testing and submission processes.
