Andy Muschietti on 'The Flash' Failure: Lack of Character Interest

Andy Muschietti, the director behind the DC Extended Universe film "The Flash," has openly discussed the movie's disappointing box office performance. In an interview with Radio Tu, translated by Variety, Muschietti pinpointed one of the key issues: a lack of broad appeal. He explained that "The Flash" failed to engage "the four quadrants" of the movie-going audience—a term used in the film industry to denote all demographics, from males and females under 25 to those over 25. This broad appeal is crucial, especially for a film with a hefty $200 million budget, as studios like Warner Bros. aim to attract a diverse audience, including even "your grandmother."

Muschietti further elaborated that "The Flash" struggled to connect with audiences due to a general lack of interest in the Flash character, particularly among female viewers. He noted from private conversations that many people simply do not have a strong connection to the Flash, which he believes contributed to the film's challenges.

When Muschietti mentioned "all the other reasons" for the film's failure, he was likely referring to several factors that have been criticized, such as the movie's poor critical reception, its heavy reliance on CGI, including the controversial use of digital recreations of deceased actors without family consultation, and its timing at the end of a now-defunct film universe.

Despite these setbacks, Muschietti's relationship with DC remains strong. He is reportedly set to direct "The Brave and the Bold," the inaugural Batman film in the newly envisioned DC Universe by James Gunn and Peter Safran. This move suggests that DC continues to value Muschietti's directorial vision, despite the challenges faced with "The Flash."
