The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special
This concludes our retrospective look at retro game eShop selections! We're running low on retro consoles with diverse enough game libraries to justify further lists. However, we saved the best for last: the original PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, building a legendary library still celebrated with re-releases today. Let's revisit ten PlayStation classics (in no particular order):
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa is a fantastic 2.5D platformer that deserves more recognition. Play as a charming, floppy-eared creature traversing a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Enjoy vibrant visuals, tight controls, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel isn't quite as strong, the collection is a must-have.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A landmark JRPG that introduced the genre to a wider Western audience. Square Enix's masterpiece propelled the PlayStation to the top. While the Final Fantasy VII Remake exists, the original remains a classic, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal is undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, launching it onto a much larger stage. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original stands as a thrilling, action-packed adventure. Its gameplay remains highly enjoyable. Plus, the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch!
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series to 3D. While the polygons show their age, the game's vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs create a captivating experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
While Chrono Cross faced the impossible task of following Chrono Trigger, it stands on its own as a unique and visually stunning RPG. Its large cast of characters (though some may feel underdeveloped) and unforgettable soundtrack make it a worthwhile adventure.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
Among the Mega Man X titles, X4 stands out for its polished design and balanced gameplay. It's a strong entry point for newcomers to the series. Grab the Legacy Collection and decide for yourself!
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
A unique blend of platforming and adventure game elements, Tomba! offers challenging gameplay and a memorable experience. From the creator of Ghosts 'n Goblins, expect a deceptively difficult but rewarding adventure.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia stands out with its bright, cheerful tone and satisfying combat system.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
This collection features the first three Tomb Raider games, showcasing Lara Croft's iconic early adventures. While quality varies, the original is a strong contender, focusing more on tomb raiding than action.
moon ($18.99)
A unique, Japanese-only release until now, moon deconstructs the typical RPG formula. More of an adventure game, it offers a distinct, "punk" aesthetic and a thought-provoking narrative.
