WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience

2K's WWE series continues its post-2022 resurgence with WWE 2K25, promising iterative improvements to its established formula. While a preview event limited access to major new features like "The Island" and revamped modes, smaller but significant changes were evident. These refinements suggest another successful entry in the franchise.

The Showcase Mode, focusing on The Bloodline's history, offers a compelling blend of recreating, creating, and altering historical matches. Experiencing Nia Jax's 2024 Queen of the Ring victory, a hypothetical Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and an alternate ending to a Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins bout showcased the mode's enhanced versatility and improved upon last year's iteration. While the "Slingshot" system of cutting to real-life footage is largely gone, replaced by in-engine recreations, a minor issue remains: complete control is relinquished during the final pin, hindering full immersion.

The checklist system, a common critique in previous entries, persists but is refined. Optional timed objectives reward players with cosmetics without penalizing failure, a welcome improvement. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout addition, offering a fresh perspective for dedicated fans.

Core gameplay largely mirrors WWE 2K24, retaining the enjoyable grappling system. However, the return of chain wrestling adds depth to the early stages of matches, allowing players to gain an advantage through strategic grappling mini-games. The submission mini-game also returns, though it's optional, as are other quick-time events.

Weapon throwing returns with an expanded selection and new environments, including the WWE archives, a fan-pleasing location filled with nostalgic items. The inclusion of Prime Hydration bottles as weapons adds a humorous touch. Most notably, intergender matches are now possible, opening up numerous previously unavailable matchups. The roster boasts over 300 wrestlers.

A new match type, "Underground," a rope-less exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting, promises further innovation. While the core gameplay remains largely unchanged, the numerous smart refinements and additions suggest WWE 2K25 will be a worthwhile purchase for wrestling fans. The full impact of the unplayed new modes will determine whether it truly surpasses its predecessor, but initial impressions are positive.
