"Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Mod Adds 12-Player Co-Op, Raid Missions in Development"
Since its record-breaking launch last year, *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* has captured the attention of fans and modders alike. The game’s modding community has been hard at work pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, but their latest achievement may be the most impressive yet — a fully functional 12-player co-op mode.
Brought to life by Tom, also known as Warhammer Workshop and the creator behind the acclaimed Space Marine 2 Astartes Overhaul, this new mod ushers in a fresh era of cooperative gameplay. In recently shared footage, players can be seen teaming up in a boss-style battle against a Tyranid Trygon Prime — an experience that feels closer to an MMO raid than traditional PvE combat.
Considering the base version of *Space Marine 2* supports only up to three-player co-op, hitting the 12-player mark is nothing short of remarkable. Even more surprising is the support from developer Saber Interactive, which has played a key role in making this mod a reality.
"Honestly, I’m just kind of in awe of Saber’s support for the modding community," Tom told IGN. "None of us expected 12-player PvE sessions to be possible this soon — but somehow, here we are. Thanks to their generosity and trust, this huge leap forward is finally here, and it completely changes what we can do."
While the current release is still in testing, early results show promising performance and functionality. Naturally, 12-player co-op throws the game's original PvE balance into disarray — with nine extra players mopping up enemies designed for smaller squads. However, modders are already developing additional content tailored for large-scale play, including modes like prop hunt, PvP within operations, and ambitious updates to horde mode featuring massive enemy waves and full-on raid-style encounters with punishing bosses that require real teamwork to defeat.
The *Space Marine 2* modding scene continues to grow, now boasting over 20,000 active members in its primary Discord server. For Tom, the excitement runs both ways — both as a player and a modder.
"As both a modder and a player, it’s hard not to be excited," he said. "Huge credit as always to the Saber team for not just making all this possible, but continuing to drop amazing content of their own too, without any of the usual predatory battle-pass nonsense we take for granted in modern titles."
This mod might even offer a glimpse into the future of the franchise. With *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3* officially in development, the promise of “large-scale battles that are even more spectacular” could very well mean expanded co-op capabilities baked directly into the sequel.
In the meantime, Saber Interactive continues to support the current title with major updates. Patch 8 brings new maps, confirmed horde mode mechanics, and hints at an upcoming new class. Modders, on the other hand, keep the experience fresh and evolving — and this 12-player co-op breakthrough proves just how powerful the community can be when given the right tools.
