The upcoming Nintendo Museum in Kyoto's Uji city is set to feature a charming surprise: a Pikachu-themed manhole cover! This isn't your average utility cover; it's a "Poké Lid," part of a nationwide initiative bringing Pokémon to the streets of Japan.

These artistically designed manhole covers, known as Pokéfuta, depict various Pokémon, often reflecting the local area's character. The Nintendo Museum's Poké Lid showcases Pikachu and a Pokéball emerging from a classic Game Boy, a nostalgic nod to the franchise's origins. The design incorporates pixelated elements, further enhancing its retro appeal.

The Poké Lid phenomenon has even spawned its own intriguing backstory. According to the Poké Lid website, the covers' origins are shrouded in mystery, with speculation suggesting Diglett's involvement in creating the holes! Regardless of their origin, these colorful covers are revitalizing cities and attracting tourists.

Numerous cities already boast their own unique Poké Lids. Fukuoka features an Alolan Dugtrio, while Ojiya City showcases Magikarp, its shiny form, and its evolution, Gyarados. Adding to the fun, many Poké Lids serve as PokéStops in Pokémon GO, allowing players to collect digital postcards.

This initiative, part of Japan's Pokémon Local Acts campaign, uses Pokémon as regional ambassadors to boost local economies and tourism. The Poké Lid project, with over 250 covers installed, is a significant component of this broader effort. The campaign started in December 2018 with an Eevee celebration in Kagoshima Prefecture and expanded nationwide in July 2019.
