Space Marine 2 Epic Requirements Spark Fan Concern
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's PC release has sparked controversy due to the mandatory installation of Epic Online Services (EOS), even for Steam users not interested in crossplay.
EOS: A Crossplay Mandate
Epic Games confirmed to Eurogamer that crossplay is mandatory for multiplayer titles on the Epic Games Store, necessitating EOS integration, even if players only use Steam. While Focus Entertainment clarified that linking Steam and Epic accounts isn't required to play, the EOS requirement remains.
An Epic spokesperson stated that developers can choose solutions to meet this crossplay requirement, but EOS, offering a streamlined solution, is often the easiest option. Its free availability further contributes to its widespread adoption.
Player Backlash and Privacy Concerns
The mandatory EOS installation has drawn significant criticism, with some players expressing concerns about perceived "spyware" and the extensive EULA. Negative Steam reviews heavily focused on this unannounced requirement, despite EOS being separate from the Epic Games launcher. Confusion surrounding data collection clauses in the EULA, regionally specific, further fueled the negative response.
However, EOS is used by numerous games, including many high-profile titles. Its frequent integration with Unreal Engine, owned by Epic, explains its prevalence. The criticism of Space Marine 2's EOS usage thus raises questions about whether it's a justified concern or a knee-jerk reaction to a common industry practice.
Players can uninstall EOS, but this disables crossplay functionality. Despite the negative reception, Space Marine 2 has received positive reviews elsewhere, with Game8 awarding it a 92, praising its gameplay and faithfulness to the franchise. The decision to keep or remove EOS remains a personal choice for each player.
