SAG-AFTRA Strikes for AI Protections
SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Companies: A Fight for AI Protections and Fair Compensation
SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, launched a strike against major video game companies on July 26th, 2024, following prolonged negotiations. The core issue centers on the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the industry and ensuring fair compensation for performers.

Key Concerns and Demands:
The union's primary concern is the potential for AI to replace human actors, replicating their voices and likenesses without consent. This not only threatens jobs but also raises ethical concerns regarding the unauthorized use of an actor's image and voice. The lack of clear AI protections in proposed contracts is the major sticking point in negotiations.

Temporary Solutions and Agreements:
To address the immediate challenges, SAG-AFTRA has implemented several agreements. The Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA) offers a tiered system for smaller budget games ($250,000-$30 million), incorporating AI protections. A side deal with Replica Studios allows actors to license their digital voices under specific terms, including the right to opt out of perpetual use.

The Interim Interactive Media Agreement and Interim Interactive Localization Agreement provide temporary solutions for various aspects of video game production, including compensation, AI usage, and working conditions. Projects under these agreements are exempt from the strike.

Negotiation Timeline and Union's Resolve:
Negotiations began in October 2022, with a near-unanimous (98.32%) vote by SAG-AFTRA members to authorize a strike in September 2023. Despite progress on some issues, the lack of robust AI protections remains a significant hurdle. Union leaders have expressed their determination to secure fair and equitable treatment for their members, emphasizing the industry's substantial profits and the crucial role of actors in video game production.

The strike highlights the growing tension between the creative industries and the rapid advancement of AI technology. SAG-AFTRA's actions underscore the importance of protecting performers' rights and ensuring fair compensation in the face of technological disruption. The outcome of this strike will likely have significant implications for the future of AI usage in video game development and other creative fields.
