Prolific Call of Duty Cheat Developer Insists It's Shutting Down — but Players Are Skeptical

The popular Call of Duty cheat provider, Phantom Overlay, has announced its imminent shutdown. In a Telegram post, the provider refused to disclose the reason for the immediate closure, stating, "This is not an exit scam and no external entity could ever compel me to exit scam my customers. I'll keep everything updated, safe, and online for 32 days longer." This 32-day extension aims to ensure users with 30-day keys receive their full value, with partial refunds planned for lifetime key holders.

This closure could significantly impact the cheating landscape, as many other cheat providers rely on Phantom Overlay's infrastructure. The news sparked a flurry of reactions online. One X (formerly Twitter) user exclaimed, "I can't believe it!! Does this mean the Season 3 cheat update is really gonna work?!" However, others remained unconvinced, suggesting a rebranding or the continuation of cheating under different names.

Activision recently acknowledged that its Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 anti-cheat measures fell short, particularly in Ranked Play during Season 1, despite initial promises of one-hour bans for cheaters. The company assures players that improved Ricochet Anti-Cheat systems are now resulting in more frequent bans, alongside the recent removal of over 19,000 accounts.

The persistent issue of cheating has drawn significant criticism, impacting competitive multiplayer. In response, Activision temporarily allowed console Ranked players to disable crossplay with PC players in Season 2. While cheating is prevalent across many games, it has become a major problem for Activision since the launch of the free-to-play Warzone in 2020. Despite substantial investment in anti-cheat technology and legal action against cheat makers, skepticism regarding the Ricochet system remains.
