Pokémon TCG Pocket to Revamp Controversial Trading System Soon

The developers of Pokémon TCG Pocket have finally unveiled significant updates aimed at revamping the game's troubled trading system, which has been a source of frustration for players since its launch. These proposed changes are promising, but players will need to exercise patience as implementation is slated for the fall.

In a detailed post on the Pokémon community forums, the developers outlined the upcoming enhancements:

Removal of Trade Tokens

  • Trade Tokens Eliminated: The cumbersome trade tokens will be entirely phased out. Players will no longer need to sacrifice cards to acquire trading currency.
  • Introduction of Shinedust for Trading: Trading will now require shinedust for cards of three-diamond, four-diamond, and one-star rarity. Shinedust is earned automatically when opening booster packs and receiving duplicate cards already in your Card Dex.
  • Shinedust Allocation: Since shinedust is also used for card flairs, the developers plan to increase the amount available to players to facilitate more trading opportunities.
  • Conversion of Existing Tokens: Any trade tokens currently held by players will be converted into shinedust upon the system's removal.
  • No Changes for Lower Rarities: Trading mechanics for one-diamond and two-diamond rarity cards will remain unchanged.

Additional Updates in Development

  • Enhanced Trading Interface: A new feature will allow players to share cards they're interested in trading directly through the in-game trading function.

The current trade token system has been widely criticized. Players needed to discard multiple high-value cards just to gather enough tokens for a single trade, making the process unappealing and restrictive. The new system using shinedust is a significant improvement, as this currency is already earned through gameplay and events. Most players likely have a surplus of shinedust, especially if they're not heavily invested in card flairs.

It's worth noting that implementing some form of trading cost is crucial to prevent exploitation, such as creating multiple accounts to transfer rare cards to a main account. The trade token system was simply too costly for most players, but the shinedust approach offers a more balanced solution.

The addition of a feature to share desired trade cards will also streamline the process, allowing players to make informed offers and fostering a more active trading community. Currently, without this feature, trading with strangers is nearly non-existent as there's no way to communicate specific trade interests within the game.

The community's reaction to these announced changes has been largely positive, with many appreciating the potential for a more user-friendly trading system. However, there's a significant downside: players who have already discarded rare cards to acquire trade tokens cannot recover those cards, even though their existing tokens will convert to shinedust.

Despite the enthusiasm, there's a substantial wait ahead. The blog post indicates that these changes won't take effect until the fall, which could mean several more expansions will come and go before the trading system sees meaningful improvement. In the interim, trading activity may stagnate as players hold off on using the current, flawed system in anticipation of the new one.

So, for now, players are advised to save their shinedust and look forward to a revitalized trading experience in Pokémon TCG Pocket later this year.
