Mastering the Path of Exile 2 Expedition Endgame: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces four major endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. This guide focuses on Expeditions, a returning mechanic from the original game's Expedition League. We'll cover finding and initiating Expeditions, utilizing the Detonator and Explosives, navigating the Passive Skill Tree, and maximizing your rewards.

PoE 2 Expedition & Detonation Mechanic

Expedition map nodes on the Atlas are marked with a light blue, spiral-shaped icon. An Expedition Precursor Tablet placed in a completed Lost Tower slot guarantees an Expedition encounter.

Within the Expedition zone, locate the central Detonator and four NPCs. The Detonator and a new Explosives UI (bottom-right) are key to the event. Your objective is strategic Explosive placement to trigger Runic Monsters, Unearthed Remnants, and Excavated Chests.

  • Runic Monsters: Spawn near Red Markers. Larger Markers yield larger monster packs, empowered by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: Relics with floating tooltips offering beneficial or detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased Elemental damage but higher item rarity from chests).
  • Excavated Chests: Spawn near Black Markers with the spiral symbol. Contain Artifacts, Logbooks, Currencies, Waystones, and high-tier gear.

Use the Explosives UI to visualize the area of effect (AoE). Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal farming. After placing Explosives, activate the Detonator. If overwhelmed, retreat and return later; the event persists.

Expedition Pinnacle Map

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. In your Hideout, interact with Dannig to access the Expedition Map. Slot a Logbook to open portals leading to an enhanced Expedition with significantly more Explosives.

This Pinnacle Map features Olroth, a challenging boss (skull icon on minimap). Defeating Olroth awards 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points.

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Accessed via the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition tree enhances the event. Points are earned by defeating Olroth.

Notable Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius by 150%, placement range by 100%, and reduces enemy life by 20% N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, Detonation chains 50% faster N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A

Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," "Timed Detonations," "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles." Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the significant reduction in Explosives.

PoE 2 Expedition Event Rewards

Artifacts are the primary reward. Four types exist, each used with a specific vendor for gear:

Reward Use Gear
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen Belts & Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig Used for other Artifacts
Exotic Coinage Refreshes vendor inventory N/A

Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Chests, unlock Pinnacle Maps and the chance to fight Olroth for exceptional rewards and additional Passive Skill Tree points.
